This is not my experience. SVN is indeed close to CVS, but is still a big improvement on several points IME. Of course if you only use the most basic functionality you won't notice.
CVS is old, and it will be ever harder to find products and services that support it, and I would not be surprised if at some point you won't find apps for it that work on newer systems. So I would advice you to switch if you can. I think the choice between SVN or something like GIT comes to the choice between wanting more features, or something with which you're already familiar. You may also consider the future possibility that SVN will go the same way as CVS now.
Also, there exist tools to do CVS to SVN conversion, you may want to google it.
