Funny, I made exactly that same point to someone else recently, on an entirely different subject, that MDI brain-damaged an entire generation of users. Designing a *development* environment for users who can't deal with more than 1 item at a time seems like a really stupid decision, since anybody who can't deal with multiple items at once cannot ever become a developer, no matter how much your environment tries to hold their hand and keep their focus.
I cannot count how many Windows IDEs over the years have made it maddeningly difficult, if not outright impossible, to see .h & .c at the same time. Such was a stupid decision then, and it remains stupid today. Clever multi-panel windows can offer nice options for organizing certain development tasks, but they should never do so at the cost of making it hard for users to position source windows (and other windows) as we want, nor should they impossible surprising & inscrutable window activations on us.
