Say you have two inspectors in separate (floating) windows. Each one is too high to fit both on top of another.
With single windows you can show both in full size overlapping each other. You will see one fully and one in part and can just switch to see the other. You may also move one to the side temporarily to see both and move it back.
With panes you can put them on top of another; but you will need to drag a divider to 'switch* between them. There usually is no fast way to show them side by side (I think).
Seems like a clear win for separate windows.

Maybe it should be possible to attach or detach panes? Don't like that attached inspector? just rip it off and drag the floating window somewhere else. :)
