FWIW, in Xcode I never close IB inspectors, and I almost never have to move them. Yet I can still easily see two windows from different NIBs next to each other if I want. (Though that often requires a very minor & quick adjustment of one window's location.)

Not as much though. At least for me it's common to want not just to compare A to B, but to see A against B & C &D. In that case, A on the left, B C D to the right, but with B C D slightly staggered allows me to switch faster & easier than anything you can do with panes (or tabs or popup menus).
