It's not so much about editing, no matter what that always involves clicking between files some way or other--it's about seeing and understanding.

I think you have underestimated the frequency of specific cases where the multiple-window workflow offers concrete advantages.

You make some reasonable points; let me add that the implied assertion that multiple windows presents unique problems here is not necessarily true.
I have no problem moving from desktop to laptop, other than the loss of efficiency from having a smaller screen. Of course my "main" screen on my desktop is the same 1920x1200 as my laptop, and this is a deliberate choice on my part, so when I move to my laptop my debug & build & console windows just jump from the aux screen to main, and I spent maybe two seconds moving 2 of the three. Then my ability to see what's in the debugger + console output + related source files at once goes away, but that of course has to happen because there's just not enough space. But my ability to navigate between source files and view multiple source files stays the same.
