I don't think Greg meant to present them as an argument, simply as information. It is up to you to determine if the effort required to support a segment of the market is worth the potential profit or not. For some products anything less than a 20% potential may not be worth it, while for others even a 1% potential is a valuable pursuit. You have to look at your own situation (and consider that numbers for other products may not reflect your specific situation) in order to determine if it is worth it to pursue a particular market segment.
Those percentages are not random. I would wager that many, perhaps a majority, of the machines running 10.5 are never going to get new software products added. Chances are most of them can't upgrade to 10.6 because they are too old; do you really want to support old PPC hardware? The answer may be yes, but it's worth considering all the trade-offs, not just the OS.
