*facepalm*
I used to work on the Mail team (in the early days of iChat, circa 2000-2002). You would not believe how many impassioned requests they got (in the form of bug requests, emails, etc.) for various pet features that people had to have and that would be “really easy to add” with just one additional pref setting. I saw a feature review meeting where an entire room-sized whiteboard was covered with a list of such things. I can’t remember the whole list, of course, but I’d be amazed if top-quote support wasn’t on it, given what a long-standing religious issue it is. And that was ten years ago.
The fact that your feature request isn’t addressed does not mean Apple doesn’t care about it. More likely it’s considered and rejected for various reasons like UI bloat*, lack of cost/benefit, or a decision that they don’t agree it’s a good feature. Part of good design is saying “no” a lot, and Apple’s gotten really good at that.

* It is really difficult to keep preference panels from exploding into BBEdit/Eudora sized monstrosities. I’ve been in multi-hour meetings devoted to arguing the merits of adding a couple of controls. In the end it’s worth it. |
