I've been using svn client software called SmartSVN for several years and am very pleased with it.  Recently, the company announced a new product called SmartGit.  I've not tried it but people who prefer Git might like to give it a try.  The URL of the company is  http://www.syntevo.com/index.html

BTW, I have no connection to the company other than being a satisfied customer.

That said, this has the potential to become a religious battle, so I
will directly state that git is widely and successfully used, was
clearly chosen by Apple as the designated successor to Subversion, and

like git, by all means use it.  If you don't, give mercurial a try
before you abandon version control entirely.

I'm not comparing Git to other systems. I chose Git only because it was right there in front of me in Xcode. The path of least resistance. I'm sure it's a fine solution.

My home-brew version control system is simplicity personified. I just create a zip archive and date it whenever I've reached some sort of milestone. It's very easy to open up one of the archives and, if necessary, run FileMerge on it, on those rare occasions when I can't remember how to recreate an earlier piece of code.

If time were not an issue, I would enjoy mastering Git, trying out the various GUI applications based on it, and working it into my daily routine. I can see its value. But time is an issue.
