As long as your current system gives you the basic features from
version control, that's okay. However, using a proper version control
system will enable you to do many more things than you can with a
system as simplified as dated zip files. You would do well to plan to
learn git or something else (though I'll recommend git over svn and
mercurial having used all three for several years).
I've yet to meet a version control GUI that's really good. My
experience with Xcode's version control integration is that it takes
an extremely narrow view of what version control can be used to do,
and I almost always find myself back at the command line rather than
using the GUI.
