You mean in IB?  You're trying to manipulate the text field on the canvas?

I find it's often impossible to select the desired object on the canvas.  Go into the treeview of objects on your dialog in the XIB document window and double-click on the text field.  This should highlight it on the canvas.  If you're lucky, you'll be able to drag the handles without deselecting the thing.

I often end up using the arrow keys to move objects around once I've selected them.  To resize, you might just use the dimension fields in the Inspector.
