I've tried that but when it gets to the point where I have 20 files open, it's not so useful. Flipping between separate windows is a different cognitive action than flipping between different parts of the same window.

Call me a wild and crazy guy, but as things stand I find it easier in Xcode to open one or more new *windows* on a file and arrange as desired, than to try to misuse the assistant editor as a pane splitter. m.
