If an iOS Simulator version is not available via the Downloads mechanism, it's not supported and may not work well (or work correctly, or work at all) with the iOS Simulator included with a particular Xcode version.
That's a very good point and I'm glad you raised it.
But to be fair, I didn't install those older iOS Simulator SDKs; the Xcode installer just left them there over the years as I upgraded Xcode. So I just said to myself, "Why am I able to simulate Xcode 4 on this computer but not on this computer? Oh, I see, one has these SDKs and the other doesn't."
And to be fair some more, the trick of actually *putting* SDKs in that folder is something I got from a different book (not my own), so clearly this is a widely disseminated technique.
And to be as fair as possible, the *real* problem is that Apple does everything it can to make it hard to program with backward compatibility, as I've complained many times here. If Apple made this easier to do, programmers wouldn't have to struggle and employ every trick they can think of. m.
