Maybe I'm missing something, but if you display the console using Cmd-Shift-Y, you can then resize the console area by dragging the "control bar". Drag it to the top of the screen and the editor will disappear completely. Full window console with debugger usage - I generally create this in a tab first and then drag the tab out into a separate window.

Of course if I interpreted your complaint wrong, then I apologise.
