I feel obliged to point out that the Mac App Store update is only 800MB (for me). The basic image download is double that size, and there are 2 other downloads too.
After Xcode *finally* got delta updates, it would be nice to give the MAS approach some positive reinforcement. :)
It was about 900 MB and took a while to download. Seems like it was bursting the data out with periods of inactivity between the bursts. I don't know if the problem was at the Apple end, my end, or in between. Maybe that solar flare had something to do with it.
