If you copy the iOS 5.1 SDK from Xcode 4.3 -> Xcode 4.2 then you're no longer using a supported configuration. Please take any such discussions off line, as they're not appropriate for the xcode-users mailing list.

I agree with your that it should be absolutely clear to you as a developer which versions of iOS that are supported by any given version of Xcode, so that you can make an informed discussion about when it would be appropriate for you to upgrade your devices. If that's not already the case, that sounds like great feedback to file as a bug report.
