Unless you're a designer, the actual point size number really doesn't matter. If you're an experienced Mac developer, there's a good chance you've been using 9pt Monaco for a decade or two. If you have good eyesight and you use a monitor capable of very high resolutions, there's no reason why you wouldn't crank it up to fit as much onscreen as possible and still be able to easily read the now tiny 9-pt Monaco.

That's why. Why would you want a certain point size to remain the same onscreen size when you changed resolutions? That totally defeats the purpose of offering multiple resolutions.
