The xcode-select man page I'm looking at, dated 11/16/11, documenting the -switch option, says:

As a convenience, for Xcode 4.3 and later, you can supply just the
path to the Xcode application, e.g. "/Applications/Xcode.app", and
xcode-select will determine the proper path to the Developer direc-
tory it contains.
====

The path into Contents/Developer is "right," but if you just point xcode-select at the app, it can do the math.
