The dividing line is between “/Developer” Xcode (4.2.1 and earlier) and “/Applications” Xcode (4.3 and later).

Versions of xcode-select included with OS X 10.7.3 and later will add Contents/Developer when you point them at an Xcode.app, in support of Xcode 4.3. Versions of xcode-select prior to that, such as those installed by the Command-Line Tools in Xcode 4.2.1, need to have Contents/Developer appended.

If you have a man page installed that says “/Applications/Xcode.app” that should also mean you have a version of xcode-select installed that understands it.
