The same thing happens half the time I copy-and-paste from a web browser into an email. Either the page used a funky background so the text color doesn’t work right on white, or I just don’t want the font they used. So I use Paste And Match Style.
Face it, the UI decision was made a long time ago that stripping styles from text is done when pasting, not when copying. I happen to think this makes more sense, too, as it means you don’t have to go back and copy the text again if you forgot to use the right command the first time. Paste And Match Style is ubiquitous, so just learn to use it. Cmd-Shift-Opt-V.
