I’ve found that you *can* open a counterpart in a separate window and the secret is to hold down Option while selecting the file from the Pop Up menu which is triggered by the button at the top left of an editor window.
I can't get that to work here. The closest I can get is to use the File > New > Window menu item, or Shift-Command-T, and then I have to choose a file to open in the new window.
Do you mean the button made of 4 little squares, at the left end of the path bar above the edit area? When you hold down the Option key, does the wording of anything in the pop-up button change?
Did you set some Xcode preference to make this happen?
