Sorry, there isn't really enough data here to understand what is going on. My advice is to debug vmware. Take a sample of it in the stuck state and ask VMWare what the problem might be.

If you have this problem with any other program, we might be able to help, but I have no knowledge of VMWare internals

1. Open an Xterm
2. ssh -X to another box
3. run an application (vmware) on the box and connect to the X server.


Typically the application runs for many minutes or hours, and then loses connectivity with the X Server. At that point, the only recovery that I'm aware of is to restart the X server and the application.
