I (very happily) stand corrected. Introduced with AS 1.8.1, seems to use the
short name of the user that logged in, ie equivalent to Unix's "logname", so
should be be resistant to environment changes. Unlike "whoami" -- try
running that, using NetInfo Manager to change your short name, then running
it again :-)
Apologies to all -- especially Apple -- for using it as an example of
"things yet to be implemented".

Use with caution! There is nothing that says the logged-in username and the
name of the current home folder *have* to be the same, though they usually
are.
