The simple fact is that with Unix built in, the "do shell script" osax can serve as a "do anything" osax. The only thing necessary to transfer is the knowledge of the string to feed it to accomplish the most simple or arcane of tasks without waiting for someone to write some new scripting addition, and it will work on everyone's system, which is often the bane of the scripting addition writer. How many times have you heard on this very list, "I'd like a built-in solution, not some extra third party thing."
Don't think I'm grousing, or saying that we don't need scripting additions. I'm just saying that having a standard flexible layer of Unix around has eliminated most of the reasons for writing a scripting addition. I'm glad, as I'm not afraid of Unix. It cannot harm me.
Plus I've got 5 scripting additions in my Home Library. They're still around.
