Never use RTF in an email client for anything. I really REALLY wish apple would get with the program in mail and go with HTML for rich text email.

RTF? Are you assuming the "Rich Text" option in Mail means "RTF"? It doesn't. It's:

	Content-Type: text/enriched;

which looks roughly similar to HTML/SGML tags, but it's much lighter-weight than HTML or RTF. Apple was avante garde enough to use it ages ago in Cyberdog (maybe earlier, in PowerTalk Mail--I forget.) It was specifically designed to meet the needs of email and provides a bare minimum of tags for font, size, color, bold, italic, underline, justification and just a couple others.

The original RFC is dated 1992. The most recent RFC is from 1996. It's been around a while, though, while the RFC claims many mail applications can at least read it or strip the tags, Apple is the only one I've seen produce mail software that sends it.

Perhaps amusingly in retrospect, it says (in 1996, remember):

"Most MIME-aware Internet mail applications are already able to either properly format text/enriched mail or, at the very least, are able to strip out the formatting commands and display the readable text. The same is not true for HTML or SGML."

[I am happy to finally be able to send my unadulterated .sig, below, with properly curled quotes. Thanks, Chuck and team! :-]
