"text art item" no longer works in AI 10

This line of a script from Ethan Wilde's "Adobe Illustrator Scripting" book will no longer compile on my Mac:

if exists (text art item "titleblock-file" of document 1) then

The error I get is "expected "," but found class name, on the word "item."

This script has always worked for me before, and nothing has changed since then... no new version of Illustrator...

Any clues would be greatly appreciated!
