OK, here's some more on this curious behaviour:
1. Insert a DVD into a 1GHz Powerbook running 10.4.2 - the DVD is The
Shining from Kubrick's UK released boxed set. The Mac is set to *not* play
DVDs automatically when mounted.
2. Drag the Video_TS folder to the hard disk and get a "you don't have
permission to copy all the items" error
3. Switch to Terminal and attempt a cp:
martinorpen$ cp /Volumes/THE_SHINING/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB /
cp: /Volumes/THE_SHINING/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB: Permission denied
4. Check permissions:
-r--r--r-- 1 martinor martinor 1073739776 Jul 18 2001 VTS_01_1.VOB
5. Open DVD Player and run the DVD for 30 seconds then quit
6. Drag a VOB file from the disk and it copies OK.
7. Repeat the cp from Terminal and it copies OK.
8. Eject the disk and then stick it back in the drive again
9. Go back to "3"
This file locking only seems to apply to VOB data. IFO and BUP files can be
copied from any disk without problems. Using ls -le shows nothing. Likewise,
lsof doesn't show that any process has opened any of the files on the DVD.
Obviously, the fact that most people will encounter this problem while using
or scripting the Finder does not mean that the Finder is to blame.
It's just another Tiger *feature*.
