Perhaps worth mentioning that to do this you should add a hidden
file called ".profile" to your home folder. You can put the path
information in there. Make sure it has UNIX line endings (lf).
Yeah but it will be ignored if you choose tcsh as your default shell
Haven't done that. And given the nature of the question from the
original post, I can't imagine that she has either.
of if you do things like "do shell script" in AppleSscript.
I don't want to alter the default behaviour of "do shell script"
specifically because most people don't, and when I send AppleScripts
to people that exploit "do shell script" I want them to work. If I
use something that requires a path to additional tools, that would
necessitate making sure the dev tools were installed on their Mac.
Most people I know don't install the dev tools. I don't expect that
people have their Macs set up like mine. What I do locally in
Terminal is something else entirely.
Much better to set your path in an environment you can set up with a
new directory and a file:
$HOME/.MacOSX/environment.plist
Same reason as above. I'd be sending things to people that didn't
work because of my different environment settings. I read the same
tech note, but I choose a different way of managing the situation.
