What I would like to know is; has anybody tried scripting the bluetooth connection to check what is available in the vicinity of their computer?

Yeah, it's easy. Use UI scripting with the Address Book.

I won't embarrass myself by posting the script because it was a _very_ infantile application that enabled me to annoy commuters on trains by "bluejacking" (sending messages via the Name fields of contact records) their phones from my laptop.

That was 4 years ago... I've matured since then ;-)

But grabbing the list of discovered devices from the bluetooth interface was easy.
