Icon files were common in classic Mac OS. The graphic data was in the resource fork and editable with ResEdit.

In OS neXt there is a .DSstore file in every folder and would be the logical place for a special icon. Given Apple's desire to get rid of things like ICON resources, and the forks in which they reside, are we sure that the Icon files being seen are not remnants of OS 9 usage of the disk?
