Chris,
Thanks for your response.
Tom Bender may indeed be working on a Cocoa version of TE+, and I hope he is, yet I'd like to move on to Lion sooner rather than later and I don't want his schedule for TE+ to determine the date of my switch to Lion.
There's no way I can fault him for his development work. The existing TE+ is IMHO a tremendous accomplishment in itself, and I don't know all the constraints on his development time.
Jeff
Yvan,
Thank you also for your response.
You have a valid point that many multiple-author programs have also been discontinued.
However, because I can't predict the future, I must choose a file-preservation plan that has the least risk, from my current point of view. In general, I believe multiple-author programs carry less risk than single-author programs.
From what I've been able to gather about file formats and likelihood of format preservation, simple ASCII text is the optimum, rtf format may be next, followed by PDF. Other constraints, such as compatibility with work-associated documents, force me to maintain many files in MS Word format. These are my four choices of file formats for my personal files (apart from spreadsheets, presentations, and other types of files).
Jeff
Shane,
Thank you for your response.
I'm aware of some of the deep aspects of Quicken for Mac development, so I know that corporations sometimes make decisions that are detrimental both to their own business and to their loyal customers.
Regarding small developers, I respect their work, and I actually understand some of the difficulties and complexities of computer programming. I obviously have purchased and used software from small developers. If I hope to avoid future pain similar to that caused by losing TE+, I've got to make some choices, and one such choice for me is not invest heavily in software that I believe may have shorter longevity than other software.
BTW, the images in my TE+ files include pict, tiff, bmp, cnv, jpeg, etc., far too many different types for me to remember.
Jeff
Malcom,
Thank you also for responding to my post.
I'm in the process of preparing for a move from Snow Leopard to Lion. Converting all my TE+ files to rtf (TextEdit) format and also replacing my aliases to TE+ files with aliases to rtf files, saving my Canvas files to PDF format and buying alternate drawing software, and recovering as many AppleWorks files as possible are the three main tasks for this preparation.
I thought I was posting a painful predicament to this mailing list. I'm sorry that you interpret my post as a complaint. For years I've been trying to reduce the amount of complaining I do and increase the amount of encouraging words I speak.
If you consider my preparations for installing Lion as stupid actions, please help me by providing some helpful suggestions.
Jeff
