I moved the "Shared" folder from <home>/Library/Developer/ into <startupdisk>/Library/Developer/.
Xcode seems to know the new location and is operating correctly.
My home folder is now a more reasonable 1.59 GB which helps with backing up.

(Apple seems not to be thinking thru the consequences of some of its decisions. ???)
