In particular, a sandboxed application can't get away with just storing paths for files if they are outside its sandbox -- they have to save special ("security-scoped") bookmark files after the user has first chosen them in an open dialog, or bring up an open dialog every time. So I wouldn't be surprised if some things that used to be stored in com.apple.mail.plist no longer are.

Hello
I am not saying that Luther was right.
I wrote only about the info which he wished to extract.
It is not stored in Mail preferences and honestly I'm no sure that it was stored in them once.
If I have free time, I will boot under Lion and maybe under Snow Leopard to check that.
To achieve the Luther's goal, I would use an other track.
When the print dialog is open, it's easy to ask the save in PDF dialog to write in the Desktop ( just issue cmd + D).
When the file is saved, we may move it to the wanted location.
From my point of view, it's easier and safer than trying to grab the « last used » folder.
After all, Apple is free to change the way it store infos used by the system as it's free to change the structure of the different interfaces (I saw three different GUI structure for the Save dialogs)
