I think Apple is making a sound business decision here, because it will
increase revenue. However, I don't know how many people will want to start
paying for something that was once free.
I for one will not be subscribing to .mac because the only part of the old
iTools that I used was the e-mail. If this were my only address, I would
probably spend the extra money to keep it.. But I have three other addresses
and several more that I don't even use.
What I like most about the itools mail is that everyone who I sent my mail
to knew I was using a Macintosh. It was like a free advertisement for
Apple. Furthermore... When the basic e-mail was free, you had many people
using the itools mail, and the Macintosh name was more visible because the
people in the community had it in their e-mail.
Now, I think that many people will use other addresses provided by their
work or ISP, like I will. Perhaps if I used the other features I would
spend $100 it, or even if Apple offered something like component pricing,
where you could just get the e-mail, or the iDisk. But to pay for a package
in which I would only use one of the features, that I don't really need to
begin with, doesn't seem like a good value regardless of the price. I just
hope that Apple's decision doesn't lead to a decline in the mac.com
addresses. I smile everytime I see one, cause I know that what I;m reading
came from a fellow mac user.
