Hi Everyone,
I am trying to catch up on email that I missed from the AUGD list. The topic
of Passwords for the Apple User Group Store came up and I wanted to comment
on this issue:
#1. I bought our clubs iMac from the Apple User Group Store and frankly it
was the most horrible purchasing experience I have ever had and I buy a
whole lot of equipment. I sent a certified check to get the clubs Mac so we
could get the computer in a few days rather than three weeks.
Yet low and behold it took over three weeks to get here and was split in two
orders. (the two orders was not that big a deal, but the three weeks in
shipping was and cause problems when we tried to get the AppleCare
warranty). My experience has taught me that unless there is some kind of
tremendous deal going on the AppleMUGStore such as the one they had earlier
this year on icebooks for $899, its really not worth it to recommend that
entity.
Actually since you only get one dollar for every hundred dollars you spend
with them, its probably better to buy from MacMall, MacWarehouse, or even
your local CompUSA.
#2. If you do recommend this entity and can get people to credit your MUG
for the purchase of stuff and they are not angry at you for the bad
experience this organization provides, then you are in a win/win situation
as you will get a credit occasional for stuff purchased through this
company. Basically to get something that costs $100, your members would
have to buy some $10,000 worth of merchandise.

I think this is a wonderful policy Barbara. And the reason I feel this way
is because by keeping the stuff private and sharing only with Paid Members
you create incentive to keep your MUG alive and have people pay dues that
will keep your MUG going.
However, again this great idea is a moot point since the MUG Center publicly
lists all the vendor deals in an unpassword protected area, thus allowing
anyone to see those deals and defeating the entire purpose of MUG Deals and
the reason for keeping this information private:

So no matter how hard we might work locally, the reality is that we are
being defeated internationally by an organization that is supposed to be
there to help us but is not.
Just something to think about.
My best,
Randy Marshall
