Hi Jim!
I'm so glad to hear that you are feeling stronger. Please be sure to take
care of yourself - first and foremost! I totally respect your idea and
agree that it is a GREAT IDEA! Very therapeutic!
Having said that, here are some things we've put on our checklist for
MaMUGs iChat AV presentations:
1) if your meeting place has broadband
2) is it behind a firewall and/or router
3) what, if any, ports need to be open for ICAV (on both sides - esp. if
you use non-Apple products for wireless and/or routers) -- ports to open:
go to prefs>sharing>firewall>new> CREATE THE FOLLOWING
iChat AV
ports: 5060, 16384-16403
iChat AV-2
port: 5298
OPTIONAL - AIM uses port 5190 so you can create one for that if
you have any problems
4) test the setup in advance! REALLY important as some places have third
party stuff that requires firmware updates and/or other admin functions
to be addressed. (Just had it happen with a facility w/ broadb. but no
ICAV possible).
5) set your bandwidth in your ICAV prefs appropriately. Again, test it
and consider the time and day of your meeting. Remember, prime time on
the net is from 6pm to 9pm in each time zone. 2Mbps should do fine if you
have it. 1Mbps might sound better but look a little jittery.
6) ONCE YOU IRON OUT THE BASIC SETUP, deal with the meeting.
7) If people are going to talk with YOU, have them step up to the camera
one at a time. The only way you'll really hear it all.
8) if you are going to watch their meeting, use an external mic (wireless
lavalier, if you have access to one, via the mic input and select in the
preferences - this can be the only tough part so wing it). Be sure you
have decent headphones, earphones or speakers on your end so that you can
really hear well.
9) Keep a cell phone handy on both sides in case something goes awry.
10) Consider taking this to the next level if it works! Try QuickTime
broadcaster and/or LiveChannel so that members (and us folk out here!)
can check out your meetings as well.
Please let us all know your results and feel free to capture some of it
in SnapzPro and post to the web. I'm sure I've forgotten something but I
know you'll get lots of help from the list.
I wish you a swift recovery and the best of luck with all of this stuff.
Best regards,
Dan
