Hi All:
I know we don't want this forum to be a technical help kind of thing,
but maybe I could push the envelop just a little bit. Here's the deal:
I am the President of our local MUG. We don't meet in the summer months
of July and August so our upcoming September 24th meeting will be our
first get together in three months. During that interim, I have been
into the hospital for one operation that involved removing a colon
cancer tumor and some associated bladder surgery and then again just
last week to have a portion of my right lung removed in order to
destroy a couple of cancerous tumors there.
I am feeling remarkably strong after all this surgery, but the fact
remains that I will not be up for doing my usual MC chores at our club
meeting nor in fact will I ever be able to make a live appearance
there. I frankly think I might well be able to do the latter, but my
wife and personal agent has put the nix on that and I think after all
she has been through over the past months it's the least I can do to
try to accommodate her wishes.
So, this is where my recently acquired iSight device comes in. I
thought it would be neat to try to demo iChat AV from my home to the
meeting location where we are lucky enough to have access to broadband
internet. In addition to highlighting the technology, there have just
been a great number of club members who have been following up on my
condition and sending their prayers and best wishes and I just thought
it would be a nice way to publicly thank everyone even if I could not
be right there in the room to do so.
The immediate challenge is that although I have my iSight camera and
iChat AV working on my wife's flat panel iMac here at home, and
everything seems to be working at this end, I am not quite sure we have
suitable equipment at the other end. I am fairly sure that no one else
in the club has an iSight camera. I think that one of our member
presenters for that night has an early Titanium PowerBook which I
presume could use an iSight camera and therefore could handle the iChat
AV software. So it occurred to me that maybe we could set up a chat
where my camera was sending my picture to the Mac at the club, but I
was not getting a video image here at my end ... just getting the sound
from the meeting end. I have tried to see if this works using other
Macs I have in my home but I am getting the impression that you cannot
receive a video image unless you have an iSight camera installed, even
though the camera is only sending, not receiving, the image from the
other end.
Bottom line is I wondered if anyone has had any experience in demoing
iChat AV at club meetings in situations like there were you don't have
all the desired equipment at both ends, and if you have any suggestions
we could try.
Thanks!!
