Sorry Dave, you are plain WRONG on this one!!!!
All the Apple User Groups I know of are 100% INDEPENDENT of Apple, Inc.
They are run by their Members for their Members - Apple has NO say in
what happens with these groups!
As Apple themselves say at http://www.apple.com/usergroups/leaders/answers/
So, once approved, are we an official Apple User Group?
No, you are a recognized Apple user group. There is no such thing as
an official Apple user group. Apple user groups are independent
organizations not authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved by
Apple. We recognize your value, encourage your efforts, and look
forward to working with you.
NONE of the Australian User Groups "operate at the pleasure nor
permission of Apple" and I doubt any of the others worldwide do either!
Here in Australia, most, but certainly not all Apple User Groups, have
some form of contact with Apple - either getting presenters from the
local Australian corporate offices, or by signing up to the Apple
Sales Website, or even just been a member of this list and/or the
Apple User Group Bulletin.
Most Australian MUGs are registered incorporated bodies, which legally
makes them a formal entity that requires them to have their own
Committees of Management, with their own Rules of Association and they
have to maintain their own records and accounts and provide annual
reports to their members and the appropriate government authority...
but no where do they have "report" to Apple.
One part of your statement where you are correct is that the
"relationship can be revoked, modified, or limited at any time." BUT
that works BOTH ways! MUGs can and do terminate their "relationship"
with Apple from time to time.
All that said, I, personally, have found staff at Apple Australia and
in the US to be very helpful and supportive of Apple User Groups and
if I have asked for specific requests of assistance or advice, I have
always either received that support directly from Apple; introduced to
a third party who was better placed to assist; OR received a prompt
and polite reply explaining why Apple can't help at that time. But
then the same can also be said with my dealings with Microsoft, Adobe
and hundreds of other vendors :)
