Hi all,
A friend of mine is developing an application related to iPhones, but
not an iPhone app. This is a software program that runs on a Mac
desktop. He approached me and said he wants to create a kit for user
groups and I showed him recent ones we received from Microsoft,
Parallels, and other vendors.
I thought T-shirts, a copy of the program in a box, and discount codes
were key, but didn't know about pens, pads, etc.
However, I thought, let's see what others have to say.
So if you were designed a swag box from scratch, what would be in it?
TWO copies, minimum of the application - One that can just be a
'plain' CD (or DVD) for use by a presenter and then a nice boxed copy
for use as a door prize.
OR
Better still, to keep costs down for the vendor (and to make it more
accessible to non-US markets) create a Disc Image that can be
downloaded that includes the App installer and manual in PDF format.
AND include a PDF (or JPEG) of a sexy looking Disc Label. This means
the Disc can then be burnt and and the label printed by the User
Group. [I do this for the Disc of the Month titles I produce for
Australian Apple Users Groups - Examples of the Disc Labels can be
found at http://www.appleusers.org/category/dotm/ ]
Include a Keynote presentation, complete with speaker notes. Perhaps
a QuickTime version of the presentation as well and the speaker notes
in a PDF. Even have a couple of versions of the presentation - a
quick 5-10 minute overview and a 45-60 minute full product demo...
many MUGs can find some one who will give a brief 5-10 presentation
(particularly if it prepared for them) but may not be able find some
to a "full scale production" or their meeting timetable may allow them
to slot a short quickie in immediately, but it may be months before a
feature length presentation can be scheduled
Consider producing a 10 minute QuickTime movie of some one giving the
actual presentation so MUGs can play that.
Plus a 30 second teaser that basically says 'Learn all about Product X
at the next meeting' that MUGs can play at their 'current' meeting to
wet people's appetites for next month's presentations
Press Releases and hi-res images of company logo, application logo and
screenshots that can be used for publication on websites, magazines etc
"Single page" document that provides information about the product,
any discount code offered to MUG Members and the URL. This single
pager could be 8.5x11" US Letter (and perhaps also include an A4
version for the rest of the world) OR it could contain two copies of
the same information laid out in landscape, so they can be cut down
the middle of the sheet and you get "two" flyers from one sheet.
A "Single Page" document with "business card sized" flyers - basically
Company Logo, Product name and a few short lines of description and of
course the URL... any discount codes etc could be printed on this as
well
OR better still, MUGs could print their OWN details on the back with a
message like "As a benefit of been a member of XYZ MUG, get a 10%
discount on product ABC by entering this exclusive code at the checkout"
Other swag is ALWAYS gratefully accepted... any product that has an
appropriate logo/image AND company URL like pens, hats, note pads,
keyrings, cute toys... BUT if it is going to prevent the 'presentation
kit' from been made available to Non-US groups (due to increased
shipping costs etc), drop the extra swag and just provide the basics
(CD or download with the App, Flyers and Presentations) to
international MUGs
Stickers are always popular. Lanyards are useful. Novelty USB Hubs are
different and practical
I've something similar to this before... it is a little different and
can be customised... and even in this day and of PDAs, Blackberries
and of iPhones, a piece of note paper and a pen can be really useful
to carry with you :)

The problem with T-Shirts is determining which sizes to send - not
everyone is a 'Medium' or even 'Large' these days - many people like a
small, or even need 4XL, 5XL or larger - and the US idea of sizes
differs greatly from Asian and European standards.
DO NOT include food stuffs... at worst it can cause the entire package
to be destroyed by customs in other countries; at best delays in
delivery or extra customs charges/fines.
CDs with Trial versions of the app (and any others produced by the
vendor - I've often people say "oh, was not interested in the product
they presented today, but look they have a trial of Product X on their
demo Disc and it is exactly what I've been looking for) are also
useful as handouts
Better still - use USB thumb drives that have the vendor or app logo
and URL on them to distribute the Trial versions... people will grab a
CD and just place it on a shelf or in a drawer after a quick look, but
a thumbdrive will most likely be 're-used' to transport other data
thus providing extra exposure... USB Pen Drives are a nifty idea
But the important thing is get the 'media' and 'presentation' kits
right first and then look at adding extra novelty items
