Per the dev documentation, no, you do not need the auth chip.
I've had good luck so far with nRF8001 based devices, and am currently
using a BlueGiga BLE112 SoC to communicate with the iPhone 4S, iOS
5.0.1, with no issues.

Basically, we make small coin-cell operated devices with not much free board space, and the idea of adding another IC is not promising for us .. we need to be able to use bluetooth we can fit on board and communicate, without any extra hardware needed .. if we use BLE, would we have to have the extra auth chip?
