Per the dev documentation, no, you do not need the auth chip.
I've had good luck so far with nRF8001 based devices, and am currently
using a BlueGiga BLE112 SoC to communicate with the iPhone 4S, iOS
5.0.1, with no issues.

I am assuming that not having to be part of the MFI program means you do not need the extra authentication hardware in the accessory is this correct? Basically, we make small coin-cell operated devices with not much free board space, and the idea of adding another IC is not promising for us .. we need to be able to use bluetooth we can fit on board and communicate, without any extra hardware needed .. if we use BLE, would we have to have the extra auth chip?
(this could be a deal breaker for us)

Do you still need to participate in MFi if you use BTLE?

Hello, I am working for a company that wants to make an accessory device which can send and receive data to/from the iphone.
I do not know where to start ...
I am reading the design guide here:
http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/BluetoothDesignGuidelines.pdf
And I see no mention of the bluetooth serial port profile, so I assume it is not supported? How then do we create a device that can connect to an iphone, and send arbitrary data?
