Sorry, not trying to start a war, etc, would just appreciate adivce.
Work at Starbucks by day and hack Cocoa by night. Just kidding!
Things are really not that bad out there. Learn as many programming
languages as you can. Learn about the development process, how to spec
out projects, set milestones and manage the client's expectations. If
you can find a niche, as the Audio guy mentioned, you can be a
successful Mac-only programmer.
Whether you are working Mac or Windows, the up-side to programming jobs
is this. In my experience, most medium to large size companies are
looking for programmers to support their operations, web presence,
internal tools, etc. Most of these companies don't know where to find
those people. Find a local company that does interesting work, or at
least tolerable work, and apply to their IT dept. Chances are you will
end up with a job.
I was fortunate to find a local company who employ me as a programmer
for client projects and for their internal tools. The projects are vary
from Excel spreadsheets, REALbasic, Web applications, and even Cocoa
applications! This company happens to really like Macs. If it were your
typical company I would be doing Excel, Visual Basic, Web apps and .NET.
Or Something.
But my point is that you don't have to slave 16 hours a day for some
greedy CEO who is going to drive the company into the ground in 12
months anyways. Just find an average company-- don't shoot for the moon.
