Let's assume for a moment that Apple is considering (based on rumors,
and only that) moving to the x86 platform.
If this were to happen, given that performance is probably twice that
of PowerPC on the other side of the fence, I don't think there would be
any noticeable loss in performance in doing runtime work.
Given that some of Apple's best work has been in the area of emulators
(68K emulator, DR emulator) and compatibility technologies, I don't
think there is anything to worry about.
If you look at the compatibility aspect, writing Cocoa apps in Java is
a definite win because in theory, you don't have to modify your
binaries at all to run on the other side of the fence.
The "Hey Apple, please compile Java" thing was just thrown in as a
wish, and I realize it has nothing to do -- well, little to do -- with
the runtime. Actually, it does to some extent, given the current GCC
Java compilation technology "gcj" is based on C++, which apparently has
a different exception model from C++.
