It's entirely possible that I misunderstood. If so, everybody make
fun of me for the next five minutes. But from my chair, it sounded
like he was asking for somebody to finish a music piracy tool. It
was that bit about "easily download mp3's on the mac" that gave me
that idea. Downloading copyrighted music is, of course, both illegal
and immoral.

FWIW, I've seen SoulSeek and its ilk used for more than just piracy.

Commercial MP3's aren't the *ONLY* mp3's available on this network - for example, the musician community I founded at www.ampfea.org often uses p2p networks for load-balancing and sharing of bandwidth expenses.

It's important to consider one thing in the criticism of P2P networks, which is that if P2P tools are not open and freely available to ALL - not *just* the big media companies - then there will be no free music in the future.

P2P is a defense against industry monopolization ... in an industry which is already well and truly governed and controlled by just a few.

If it weren't for P2P, a lot of good, independent musicians and artists would not have a chance against the organized big media.

*THIS* is why its important to continue the soulseek project under the guise of good GPL-based leadership.

Open, honest, and *public* code which assists in the construction of p2p networks is a good thing, no matter the taint provided by industry monopolists who would prefer that everyone have to come to them, and only them, for music.

I'm not flaming anybody. I just thought the guy might like to know
how his message came across, and would appreciate the opportunity to
clarify it if he so desired. In point of fact, I *meant* to reply
only to him privately, but blah blah stupid "reply all" button blah
blah. So apologies all around.

Just keep in mind, in the future, that the pirates aren't the only ones using P2P. P2P networks have a very, very legitimate use in spite of the public 'perception' (courtsey of big media) that the only good use for P2P is piracy.

(Bitstream is the media-content technology of the future. The moment we get Bitstream clients in ... say ... a Sony Clie ... we'll *all* (not just big media) going to have an interesting and highly affordable new way of sharing our art to a lot of people.)
