But why? It shouldn't ever have caused a problem. And the Finder

Definitely. "Feature" here baing the possibility to delete an open or
running file, the lack of which is one of the worst Windoze problems.
Agreed that on the Finder level (and *NOT* below) there *possibly*
should be a warning "This is an open document / a running application,
if you really want to move/copy/delete it, the result can be
disastrous".
Nevertheless, it should be *very carefully considered* not to make the
result as safe as unusable. Take a remotely similar case of draggin'
the document icon from the window title: the code tries to be smart,
not allowing you to drag the icon from an unsaved document. It is the
second worst decision from the moment Apple moved scrollbars to the
wrong side of the scrollview -- umpteen times a day I would need to get
the *saved version of the document* to copy it somewhere and/or check
it contents, and am losing precious time by having to use Finder or
Terminal instead of simply dragging its icon to do so.

So users feel that need to be admin to get any work done?
Again, definitely. During the course of becoming admins they would
learn that some things are not done (and why).
Anyway, I suggest we end this thread, for it is definitely OT: we won't
learn anything of Cocoa, and we won't be able to change Apple policy
anyway, even if we happen to agree it is desirable.
