Add to that the fact that no matter what permissions these plugins get
they must have read access at the least in order to read any file it
is given so if it finds emails, passwords, etc, it can still do bad
things. So since it can easily be installed by the app anyway, why not
have it in the App bundle then the Apps are still self contained and
when you remove the application you lose the ability to index files
created by that application, seems logical to me.

Actually, if Apple would include systrace in 10.4 (as I've asked at least once, along with others) they could probably gate the plugin's access to all resources, whether file or network or whatever. So they could give it read-only access only to the files it needs to index, and not allow it access to anything else at all. More than that, they *could* give it write access or other things if necessary; the whole point of fine-grain controls like systrace is to maintain flexibility, which has been the main (and dare I say only) argument against a "controlled" approach like this.

Personally, I wonder why Apple has never implemented a more powerful front-end to app packages; why, for example, couldn't they provide a list of plugins when you select the application in the Finder (in column view or in the Get Info window), and allow you to manipulate those plugins directly (drag & drop)? They could put in similar interfaces with Spotlight importers and the like, with checkboxes as appropriate (or whatever else) to enable/disable them, etc.

Yes yes, file an enhancement request. I am using Bugreporter again these days, but I'm not *that* trusting again, yet.
