Thanks Charlton and Ali and others for entertaining my question and rant.

It looks like the writing is on the wall. Use Objective-C or go home. A half supported java solution is, well, no solution. Looks like I'll have to start over. Only a couple of weeks of spare time lost and I learned about other aspects of modern Mac programming that were not wasted. Anybody want to buy a Java book?

best,
jp

And while we are on the subject, if Apple can switch from PowerPC to Intel so seamlessly, why not switch to a programming language that is a bit more "standard". I'm pretty sure nobody else in the world writes objective C, or at least I've never heard of it in any context other than NextStep code. It really irks me to keep having to remember new syntaxes all the time. After four or five different languages they all just kind of melt into one big blob in your brain and you spend twenty minutes getting five minutes worth of coding to compile. Thanks for letting me rant.

The power of Objective-C is the reason Apple can move from PowerPC to Intel so seamlessly. People can do Cocoa programming in Java, and by and large stay away in large numbers; people can do C++ in Carbon, and they find that it's a lot more work.

And if you find four or five programming languages confusing, keep on learning them: after you've played with 20 or so, you'll see the similarities beneath the syntax, and you'll find the syntax less of a problem. Languages and syntax are the *beginning* of a programmer's skills, not the end.
