Okay, he's the story why Kodak doesn't like to talk about ICC and the Approval
together. The reason is publication work, and measurable dot. As
long as the Approval can maintain a stable
output, I'll apply my profile and be on my merry way. Hallmark in
Georgia uses ICC
profile exclusively on their XP4. ICC profiles and the Approval are
a great match,
so ignore your Kodak rep and build your profile and you'll be a lot happier.
I too have profiled Kodak Approvals and had great results. It is a
great system and can be profiled well.
It is indeed true that you will "contaminate" your dot structure with
"inks" that would not appear on press. If your customer is the type
to take the dot as gospel, then you will probably want to use
techniques other than ICC for your color management.
The last approval that I profiled matched their DuPont Waterproof so
closely that they were reaching out to feel the surface of the prints
to tell them apart. So if the dot is not gospel, you should have good
results.
