I'm told that the two options IPB 4.0 offers are "Normal" mapping or "Reduce Contrast". Reduce Contrast is stated to preserve all the detail in Highlights and shadows but to make a profile which will result in scans which are low contrast and dark .

Perhaps you have a different version?
