I am a firm believer in profiling trans separately for Kodak, Fuji,
etc. All >tests indicate that accurate target data for each type is

in production scans.
Yes, but I think what Andrew is saying is simply that it's not
accurate to a fault that the IT8 target a manufacturer gives out also
covers the media that same manufacturer gives out. Similarly, it's
not accurate to a fault that the Target Definition File a
manufacturer gives out also covers the IT8 targets that same
manufacturer gives out.
Then you can use the batch TDF supplied with your IT8, or you can
make a custom target definition file. Making a custom target
definition file is a ProfileMaker feature that goes back further than
my oldest NFR. It is manual and sloooow on the SpectroScanT -:).
There is work being done within the ICC and by manufacturers to
resolve some of these problems. In the autumn if not sooner I'd also
think profiles for color negatives will see the light of day.
As for the Linocolor functionality, what you profile is the actual
lamps, the actual CCD filters and the actual IT8 media. The Base
Density Analysis allows you to work with variable density media for
the same profile without clipping your highlights, and if you are
working with Kodachrome which doesn't have an IT8 then a tip was
posted on the list a while back on how to create a modified profile
for that.
