It was always my impression that the IT8 profiled how the scanner "sees"

I am a firm believer in profiling trans separately for Kodak, Fuji,
etc. All tests indicate that accurate target data for each type is
also critical, in order to achieve the best local contrast/detail in
production scans.
It seems that CCDs are especially to blame. While they capture color,
they often do not "see" color the way our eyes do. I believe that
with separate profiles, we are forcing the system to reproduce color
the way our eyes see the image. Many folks do not see a magenta bias
in Fujichrome midtones, for example. Most scanners pick up this
variation.
By producing a Fujichrome and an Ektachrome profile for a calibrated
scanner, the accuracy of the reproduction is improved for those
looking for critical matching.
